PopCap Dublin shuts its doors for good

EA Games has closed the PopCap Dublin studios, just over a year and a quarter since it bought out the casual game developer and a month since 50 other employees were fired from the US branch.

Apparently most of the 96 people affected by the closure will be offered places at other PopCap or EA studios, but of course that would mean up and moving to a different location. However there are quite a few spots available within Ireland at “technology partners” and at an EA customer support centre, though it seems hard to see how artists or programmers would find their skills applicable at those locales.

EA’s reasoning for the closure was that ultimately many of the roles within the Irish firm were “duplicative” of EA ones, suggesting that games being worked on at the company were in a similar vein as those being produced by other Electronic Arts studios.

PopCap Ireland: Good while it lasted

Two of PopCap Dublin’s higher ups have taken to Twitter to announce their sadness at the news. PopCap PR head Stu Taylor said: “so that’s it then. The emerald dream is over. To the pub, Batman!” While associate producer JP Vaughan said: “And its official, Popcap Dublin is now closed icon sad PopCap Dublin shuts its doors for good .”

While sad, this move by EA has been known about for some time as employees were given the news about a month ago. Vaughan confirmed this after condolences from followers prompted him to say: “ntb, have had 30 days to prepare. Some stuff to sort then pub. The weather is apt for the mood icon biggrin PopCap Dublin shuts its doors for good .”

KitGuru Says: Always sad to see studios close, especially ones that have been around for a while. What do you guys think of the shut down?
